Trey Gunn - (1994) One Thousand Years

Trey Gunn - (1994) One Thousand Years

"Trey GUNN is probably best known for his contribution to KING CRIMSON’s album “Thrak”, but he has also toured and recorded with SUNDAY ALL OVER THE WORLD, Toni Childs, The ROBERT FRIPP STRING QUINTET, David Sylvian, Vernon Reid, Michael Brook, Erick Johnson and David Hykes of the HARMONIC CHOIR. A native of Texas, he began his musical life at age seven playing classical piano. His interest in music grew through various instruments: electric bass, electric and acoustic guitar and keyboards. He is an accomplished player of both the Chapman Stick and an instrument known as the Warr Guitar, a custom-made 10-string ‘touch’ guitar with the range of a piano. In addition to helping run a Seattle collective music label called First World, he is currently sharing his time between his own TREY GUNN band, the next phase of KING CRIMSON and various session work (he plays on the John Paul Jones CD, "Zooma")."

Robert Fripp & David Sylvian - (1993) Damage

Live, released in 1993

DAVID SYLVIAN Damage - Live (with Robert Fripp)

The heading is a misnomer. This is not simply a David Sylvian album, NO, it's much much more. You get enough Robert Fripp, Trey Gunn and Pat Mastelotto to give the impression that something more is going on. I love Sylvian's solo albums, but this collaboration is distinctive and powerful, eschewing his mainly ambient melancholy for cKrimsonian might and crashing bravado. Oh, how I wish this had been a King Crimson reformation. Three or four studio discs, a live disc and then quit. OUT with Adrian Belew's poppy and oh- so-American vocals and IN with the master of suave, sexual and languid whispers of David Sylvian. Additionally, Michael Brook's infinite guitar is the perfect understatement to Fripp buzz saw sustain. Musically delicious.

Most of the disc offers The First Day in a live format, but the tunes are more enticing and raw played before an audience. The mood seems electric, pulsing with Mastelotto's kick drum. Trey Gunn's touch guitar keeps the whole endeavour grounded, but he occassionaly reaches skyward and offers snippets of melody and fills the spaces with a deft flurry of notes. The band covers a few of Sylvian's solo material, but remember, Fripp has guested on quite a few. His presence is more central to the music on this recording.

This is, basically, a must have for any Crimson/Sylvian afficionado. Modern music played extremely well and hitting on all cylinders. It don't get any better than this.

King Crimson - King Crimson Collector's Club 08 (1994) VROOOM Sessions

King Crimson - (1994) KCCC08 VROOOM Sessions

(Review from progreviews.com)

The eighth edition in the King Crimson Collector's Club presents outtakes from the first series of rehearsals of the 'double trio' of the band in 1994.

The sessions heard here are largely an exhibit of six musicians just beginning to oil their joints as a unit with no firm material yet established. So, one can't fault Fripp and company too much for stretching out in what is clearly a rehearsal setting not recorded with an eye towards release.

Still, even in these simple jams, there's a slightly detectable forced 'descent into busywork' that seemed to dog this lineup at the expense of a more focused simplicity. Eventually this led to the oversaturation and the band moved towards partitioning into 'fraKctals'.

That's not to say there aren't some interesting moments to be found here. The aptly titled "Monster Jam", with Fripp's sinister soundscapes and Bruford's thundering drumwork, shows the tremendous force that this band could summon with little difficulty. Among the other tracks, "Bill & Tony" recalls "Waiting Man" from Beat, and there are instrumental run-throughs of "One Time" and an embryonic version of "Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream" (here entitled "No Questions Asked"). Also, "Krim 3" would eventually see light as a track on Adrian Belew's solo album under a different name.

Obviously one wouldn't expect to hear anything inspiring, though it provides insight into this particular time slot in Crimson's history for the interested.

King Crimson - King Crimson Collector's Club 07 (1998) ProjeKct Four San Francisco

King Crimson - (1998) KCCC07 ProjeKct Four San Francisco

(Review from progarchives.com)

This release is subtitled “The roar of P4” and that's just what it is. It was recorded on November 1, 1998 at the 7th Note in San Francisco. It is a heavy and dark album.

The album opens with “Ghost”. It starts with a spacy sound, but this is soon supported by a fast beat and extensive soloing by Fripp. An energetic track. This followed by “Heavy” and “Light ConstruKction”. These two tracks were previously performed by ProjeKct Two (they can be found on the album “Live Groove”) and were later performed by ProjeKct Three (on the album “Live in Austin”). The track “Deception of the Thrush” was later adopted by King Crimson. “Seizure” can also be found on the improve disc of the triple album “Heavy ConstruKction”. Again a very dynamic track, not much melody but mainly rhythm. The album closes with “Ghost 3”, which is a slow and heavy track and “ProjeKction” that resembles the space sound of ProjeKct Two.

Track List :
01. Ghost - 8:50
02. Heavy ConstruKction - 9:14
03. Light ConstruKction - 8:32
04. Deception Of The Thrush - 9:04

Robert Fripp & The League of Crafty Guitarist - (1985) Live

Guitar Craft
Fripp was offered a teaching position at the American Society for Continuous Education (ASCE) in Claymont Court, West Virginia in 1984. He had been involved with the ASCE since 1978, eventually serving on its board of directors, and had long been considering the idea of teaching guitar. His course, Guitar Craft, was begun in 1985, one of the results of which was a performance group, "The League of Crafty Guitarists," which has released several albums. In 1986, he released the first of two collaborations with his wife, Toyah Willcox. The members of the California Guitar Trio are former members of The League of Crafty Guitarists, and Gitbox Rebellion includes several former Guitar Craft students.

"From the opening cascade of harmonics that greet the listener in "Invocation", to the Fripp leads that soon follow, Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists' first release, "Live!", immediately confirms Mr Fripp's commitment during this period of his life to the craft of guitar. While occasionally recalling bits of his works with Andy Summers, this release primarily marks new ground in Mr Fripp's recording career.

""Tight Muscle Party ..." weaves simple, fast patterns with several guitars; "The Chords That Bind" manages to convey a lovely, Asian influence in its peacful setting while in fact being--a chord study. It is followed by the precision playing of the appropriately titled "Eye of the Needle", the even more demanding "All or Nothing II", and the beautiful "Aspiration", which begins with more harmonic work, and then showcases a slow, extended solo.

"The second half of the recording begins with another version of "All or Nothing", in which the close listener will hear Fripp count off before the playing begins. "Circulation" is obviously influenced by a scale, but rather than simply run through the scales, the players play the notes in an order and with a timing that creates a truly "musical" effect. "A Fearful Symmetry" is, comparably, more chaotic, as the Crafties (who are given co-writing credit with Fripp) are allowed to stretch out just a small bit.

"What is particularly impressive about this recording is that, as noted several times above, these pieces are primarily tools with which one learns the craft of guitar. Yet those who enjoy Mr Fripp's solo playing will find this recording well worth listening to for its own musical merits.

"But with all due respect to the Crafties, the high point for enthusiasts of Mr Fripp's guitar playing will still be his solo showcase, "The New World". This track is among the most beautiful and fulfilling Frippertronic works on record. The basic track is a combination of short bleeps and long notes, over which he plays melodic leads with his signiture style. As enjoyable as it is to have some extended recordings of "acoustic Fripp", this track shows him at his best: Fripp the experimental electric guitarist.

""Crafty March", the only obviously "live" track by the way, brings this enjoyable recording to an appropriately upbeat close."

I bought this CD when it came out and still listen to it 3-4 times a year. The large guitar ensamble sounds great. The arrangements are simple, and that's appropriate for the unique recording situation -- not only was the recording a surprise but the concert itself. As a result, there's an urgency to the recording that keeps it fresh. Using a guitar class to render a cycle of songs was a risky move that allowed Fripp to also demonstrate the technique and tuning he developed and was advocating.

California guitar Trio - (1995) Invitation

California Guitar Trio (CGT) is a band of three guitar players founded in 1991. Paul Richards of Salt Lake City, Utah, Bert Lams of Brussels, Belgium, and Hideyo Moriya of Tokyo, Japan first met in England at one of Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft Courses in 1987. After completing several of these intensive courses, the three toured worldwide with Fripp's League of Crafty Guitarists. Wanting to continue together after the League had run its course, Bert, Paul and Hideyo convened in Los Angeles and founded The California Guitar Trio in 1991, honing their intricate original compositions, surf covers, and classical re-workings.

With a whirlwind of instrumental styles fusing classical, rock, blues, jazz, world music, bluegrass, as well as the quintessential California musical genre surf music, the California Guitar Trio's stunning virtuosity and sly sense of humor have earned them a rabid following and wide notoriety, with significant crossover in the progressive, acoustic and classical music scenes.

Notably, CGT music was featured on the television coverage of the 1998 and 2000 Olympic Games, and on CBS, NBC, CNN WorldBeat, and ESPN TV programs. The CGT performed on the 2003 Grammy Awards nominated track Apollo on Tony Levin's CD Pieces of the Sun; and CGT music was sent into outer space as wake up music for the crew aboard NASA’s Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Over the past 12 years of nearly incessant touring, the California Guitar Trio has shared the stage with superb musicians and performers such as: King Crimson, John McLaughlin, David Sylvian, Tito Puente, Leftover Salmon, Taj Mahal, Steve Lukather, Simon Phillips, Adrian Legg, Enchant, and many more.

Since their inception in 1991, the Trio has released 12 Cds: 7 studio Cds featuring original works from the CGT and a variety of classics such as Bach’s Toccata and Fugue and Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. Four live releases that show the trio at their best onstage, and a Christmas CD with familiar and not-so familiar Christmas music, which continues to receive rave reviews.

Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is worth the price of the whole CD! Yes, this is the Bach piece redone superbly by these guys. When I saw that Robert Fripp was the executive producer, I had high hopes for this record. This surpassed even my expectations! The players and production is fresh by today's standards. They lean towards an accessable progressive edge and will not disappoint you. Phenominal spin!!!
