ELP - (1995) I Believe In Father Christmast

" In addition to being a surprisingly effective and successful showcase for art rock Christmas music, this holiday EP is also well-representative of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's sound across several decades. Opening with the original Greg Lake single "I Believe in Father Christmas," featuring a full orchestral backing, it then jumps ahead 20 years to Troika (from Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite), as done by Keith Emerson -- utilizing the same musical source that Lake and Peter Sinfield appropriated for "I Believe in Father Christmas" (and which, in turn, is familiar to millions of filmgoers for its use in Ronald Neame's The Horse's Mouth and Woody Allen's Love and Death), the music becomes a showcase for Emerson's nimble-fingered keyboard work. Then comes "Humbug," a suitably good-humored instrumental -- highlighted by some virtuoso clarinet -- that was the B-side of the Lake single. The 1977 ELP version of "I Believe in Father Christmas" from Works, Vol. 2 follows, leaner and less opulent than Lake's solo version and featuring Emerson and Carl Palmer's playing. And the entire disc ends with ELP's version of Kim Fowley's "Nutrocker" from Pictures at an Exhibition, a flashy rendering of a part of the Tchaikovsky Nutcracker Suite, which leaves one with a pleasant progressive rock take on the holiday, surprisingly without too much pretentiousness. ELP - 1992 The Atlantic Years

ELP - The Atlantic Years

Perhaps this is the unique collection by ELP which is really worth to be checked out from the beginning to the end!! The selection is good and the remastered tracks earn a lot...I think of "Tarkus", but also "Picture at an exhibition". Certainly the ballad "I believe in Father Christmas" by Lake is not unforgettable, but his contribution within the whole contest works quite well! Besides it's strange that such an aggressive and epic song like "Hoedown" has been not chosen, but of course it's not a major defect, as they have inserted the memorable suite "Karn Evil 9" into this remarkable collection.

ASIA - (2002) "Anthologia (The 20th Anniversary)"

(Review from Progarchives)

Boxset/Compilation, released in 2002

ASIA had one of the biggest selling debut albums in the 80s with their self-titled art- prog rock masterpiece. Their ascent up the charts was a phenomenon that many groups never experience during a career. They never attained that kind of success again. While ensuing releases had some solid work, their stunning debut proved too difficult to match. The magical formula and achievements of their first recorded works began to dissipate with each successive release. Some of their songs were utter syrupy pop and nothing but a shadow of the powerful artsy progressive rock-pop that they had crafted so perfectly on their first outing.

"This 20th Anniversary" set fills two discs with every song from "Asia", "Alpha", and "Astra" including B sides and some rarities. John Wetton's vocals always reminded of Greg Lake of ELP. He has one of the great rock voices with an immense history behind him. For me, that is why I was originally attracted to this group because I was really into ELP. Besides the fact that is all you heard on the radio and nearly everyone had the album or cassette, it was and is great music.

This was good for me to go beyond the first album and really listen closely. I heard some tracks that I truly enjoyed, like "Countdown To Zero" and "After The War." Although the keyboards remained predominant, the energy was entirely different as you go from album to album, because of shifting personnel.

As sweet as success can be, it's even harder to maintain, and it doesn't matter what field you are in, it isn't specific to music alone. A modicum of success was maintained for several years then eventually the group faded to become another classic prog-rock historical metaphor. They are once again active with a recent release titled "Aura", which is a very good album in my opinion; just don't be too over anxious about what you will hear.

If you are looking for an all encompassing "Asia" set this is this one to pick up.

ELP - 1977 WORK LIVE

(Review from wikipedia, allmusic)

ELP's live album documenting their late 70s period was released posthumously in 1979, more as a contract-fulfilling album, since the band had broken up before then. It was recorded at the August 26, 1977 show at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Originally released with the title "In Concert", it was re-released with the addition of more tracks from the same concert, this time under the name "Works Live".

The band hired a 70-piece orchestra for some concerts of this tour but eventually had to dismiss the orchestra due to budget constraints that almost bankrupted the group. On the original album, the orchestra was featured in 4 tracks, the re-release adds 4 more orchestral tracks. Similar to most live albums, In Concert showcased fan favourites of previously released material. However, "Peter Gunn", ELP's take on the classic TV theme song, was never released on any of their other albums to date. ELP frequently opened with this song on the Works Volume II tour.

The set list is the widest ranging of their entire history, reaching back to "Knife Edge" (from their first album) and reviving "Abaddon's Bolero", an instrumental from Trilogy, plus a brace of tracks of all proportions from both Works albums.

There is a real sense listening to this album, however despite some light and disarming moments, that you're really listening not so much to a band as to three personalities just chomping at the bit to go solo. Lake's featured numbers were, by now, so guitar-focused that they sounded like a separate body of music, which they were. Carl Palmer, who had fully come into his own as a creative musician by this time had also achieved a distinct voice, matching that of the other two members.

The recording was done in a stadium, so it lacks the acoustics of other venues designed for music concerts. ELP isn't as fiery as we were accustomed to in their early 70s concerts. Nevertheless, it's a fair representation of the live late 70s ELP.
