GODS – (1968) GENESIS

GODS – GENESIS – 1968 (UK)

"The Gods" were an English group founded in 1965. The bandmembers included Mick Taylor (later with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and the Rolling Stones), Brian Glascock and John Glascock (later of Jethro Tull). They were schoolmates from Hatfield and had been playing together as The Juniors (or The Strangers), a band they formed in 1962. Also part of this band were Malcolm Collins and Alan Shacklock. They had a record deal with Columbia. Their first 7" single (Columbia DB7339) appeared in 1964 (There's a pretty girl/Pocket Size). In 1965 the line-up was changed. Mick Taylor continued to play guitar and teamed up with Ken Hensley (organ/vocals) (later guitarist with Uriah Heep). They also added Joe Konas (guitar/vocals) and changed their name to "The Gods". In 1966 The Gods opened for Cream at the Starlite Ballroom in Wembley, London. A single (Come On Down To My Boat Baby/Garage Man) was recorded in early 1967. At this point the line-up included Mick Taylor, Ken Hensley, John Glascock, Brian Glascock and Lee Kerslake.

In May 1967 Mick Taylor got a call from John Mayall who was looking for a new guitarist. When Taylor joined the Bluesbreakers, he left behind a faltering bluesband. The band sought to revive their fortunes on the club/college circuit. They relocated to London and secured a residency at The Marquee. John Glascock (bass) was replaced by Greg Lake in June 1967. The problem was that Greg Lake was too talented for the background role the rest of the band had in mind for him and in the Summer of 1968 he split to join King Crimson. The band had to re-group again and John Glascock was asked to return.

With John Glascock back in the fold they recorded a couple of interesting progressive rock albums and a few 45s. Of their 45s, "Hey! Bulldog", the Beatles track, is their best known, and both sides have been included on compilation CD "The Great British Psychedelic Trip Vol. 3". The band played an imaginative amalgam of psychedelia and progressivism. Tracks like "Towards The Skies" and "Time And Eternity" from their 1968 album Genesis are full of heavy ploughing Hammond organ and distorted guitar riffs and Ken Hensley's unique and rather dramatic vocals add a further dimension.

Most of The Gods' material is pretty typical late sixties pop/rock, epitomised by songs like "Radio Show" and "Yes I Cry". The compilation album The Best Of The Gods offers a good way to get to know the band's music. There are shades of Vanilla Fudge on their cover of West Side Story extract "Maria". On a few tracks like "Candlelight" and "Real Love Guaranteed" there is an inkling of the heavier sound Hensley and Kerslake would propagate in their next venture, Uriah Heep.

The Gods were the successors of the Rolling Stones at the famous Marquee Club in London. After recording two albums, Genesis (1968) and To Samuel a Son (1969), they signed with a new record company, recruited Rebel Rousers singer Cliff Bennett and changed their name to Toe Fat which also lasted two years and two albums.

When it came out in 1968, the LP consisted of 10 tracks. The 1994 CD version has an additional four songs. It features both sides of the band's extremely rare 45's singles "Baby's Rich" and "Hey Bulldog".

The cover of the CD shows the original sleeve artwork which was designed by Hipgnosis. "Hipgnosis" was a British art design group that specialized in creating cover art for the albums of rock musicians and bands, most notably Pink Floyd, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Def Leppard, Yes, Styx, Scorpions, and Black Sabbath. Hipgnosis consisted primarily of Storm Thorgerson, Aubrey Powell and, later, Peter Christopherson. The group dissolved in 1983, but Thorgerson still works on album designs. In 1968 Thorgerson and Powell were asked by their friends in Pink Floyd if they were interested in designing the cover for their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets. They did, and did additional work for EMI, including photos and album covers for Free, Toe Fat and The Gods. Being film and art school students, they were able to use the darkroom at the Royal College of Art, but when they completed school, they had to set up their own facilities. They built a small darkroom in Powell's bathroom, but shortly thereafter, in early 1970, rented space and built a studio.

When first starting out, Powell and Thorgerson adopted their name from graffiti they found on the door to their apartment. They liked the word, not only for sounding like "hypnosis," but for combining two somewhat contradictory terms, "hip", or new and cool, with "gnosis," relating to ancient learning.

The Gods' debut album was the sound of a band capturing the transition of British psychedelia into more ostentatious progressive hard rock. Ken Hensley's heavy Hammond organ was the center of their sound, and both that and the sometimes overbearing vibrato vocals pointed toward the less psychedelic sounds he and drummer Lee Kerslake would pursue in Uriah Heep. Genesis is undoubtedly lighter than Uriah Heep, though, often employing characteristically late-'60s British vocal harmonies. Some tunes, like "Candles Getting Shorter" and "Radio Show," even skirt a pop-soul sensibility. But the songs weren't terribly memorable, though they were segued together by brief odd'n'goofy instrumental bits at the end of tracks in keeping with the modus operandi of the psychedelic era. The Mellotron in "I Never Know" does rather remind one of the way the instrument was used on King Crimson's first album, though King Crimson inserted it into much better material. The CD reissue on Repertoire adds both sides of their first two singles (from 1968 and 1969) as bonus tracks; these are slightly more pop in feel than their album, including one of the most obscure '60s covers of an obscure Beatles song, "Hey Bulldog."

King Crimson - (1993) The Concise King Crimson

King Crimson - (1993) The Concise King Crimson

Boxset/Compilation, released in 1993

I have taken the easy way to make a review, it´s easier to review a compilation or "Best of" than an a complex studio album.

King Crimson being a monster of Progressive Rock, is neccessary to be tasted by every prog fan, if you like it or not, that´s the less important, but you have at least to listen to them to haveyour persola criteria about the band, i think for deep prog fans like the most of the people in this site, is not important to own a compilation, at least it´s not that usual that i put my Bests Of in my CD player very often, sometimes is good because maybe you have the mood of listen to those classic songs (usually called hits) , but it´s obvious that we prefer much more the studio albums.

The fact is, that the opposite happens when you are a newbie, i mean, i have had the experience of people that are interested in new bands, the first thing that they do before buying the album , is download some songs, usually the most well known songs, and then they decide if dig the band or saty away, so my thoughts here is that a compilation or best of could be recommendable for people who is not familiar with the band or the songs, they probably dont know the names of the most beautiful albums, so the easy way is buying a compilation which supposes to contain the most representative songs (not always the best songs.

King Crimson had released some compilation albums, Sleepless is one of them, and maybe the one that i prefer.

A newcomer of King Crimson maybe won´t know that they have had several line up changes, and musical changes, in this album i think the track selection is suitable for newbies and also for Crimson lovers (as i said above, a Crimson lover won´t play a compilation that often, but sometimes it´s ood to have a nice time).

The order of the tracks is chronologically , which is a good point, because you will appreciate the different eras one by one, and not suddenly like in "The Compact King Crimson" which track list is not that different from this one, but the order makes it terrible to listen to. Also we won´t find the original songs, some of them have been edited to give pass to other ones, it´s only like a proof of what King Crimson music is about.

Track Listings:
1. 21st century schizoid man (7:20)
2. Epitaph (8:45)
3. In the court of the Crimson King (7:19)

King Crimson - King Crimson Collector's Club 01 (1969) Live at Marquee

King Crimson - (1969) KCCC01 Live at Marquee

(Review from wikipedia, progarchives.com)

In 1998, King Crimson Collectors' Club (KCCC) were founded, a service that regularly releases live recordings from concerts, studio sessions and radio sessions throughout the band's career.

Live at The Marquee is the first of many KCCC albums. Tracks 1-7 believed to be recorded at the Marquee Club, London, UK, July 6, 1969. Track 8 was recorded at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, UK, October 17, 1969.

Fripp is absolutely marvelous on this record, and his harmonizations and arpeggios are flawlessly executed, as well as the occasional shreds. Greg Lake's vocals here are awfully forced and there's hardly any modulation in his voice, often just shouting. Giles is Giles as always, a very underrated drummer, although this album is probably not the best way to be introduced to his talents; studio albums will do much better. Ian McDonald's flute sounds flowing as always, especially on "Travel Weary Capricorn": a very jazz-flavoured piece, in which he pulls out a "Ian Anderson".

This album has the worst bootleg quality you could find anywhere, but if you're not an audiophile or a sound quality freak, then this will present no problem. Proceed with caution though... this albums has as much flaws as virtues.

ELP - (1995) I Believe In Father Christmast

" In addition to being a surprisingly effective and successful showcase for art rock Christmas music, this holiday EP is also well-representative of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's sound across several decades. Opening with the original Greg Lake single "I Believe in Father Christmas," featuring a full orchestral backing, it then jumps ahead 20 years to Troika (from Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite), as done by Keith Emerson -- utilizing the same musical source that Lake and Peter Sinfield appropriated for "I Believe in Father Christmas" (and which, in turn, is familiar to millions of filmgoers for its use in Ronald Neame's The Horse's Mouth and Woody Allen's Love and Death), the music becomes a showcase for Emerson's nimble-fingered keyboard work. Then comes "Humbug," a suitably good-humored instrumental -- highlighted by some virtuoso clarinet -- that was the B-side of the Lake single. The 1977 ELP version of "I Believe in Father Christmas" from Works, Vol. 2 follows, leaner and less opulent than Lake's solo version and featuring Emerson and Carl Palmer's playing. And the entire disc ends with ELP's version of Kim Fowley's "Nutrocker" from Pictures at an Exhibition, a flashy rendering of a part of the Tchaikovsky Nutcracker Suite, which leaves one with a pleasant progressive rock take on the holiday, surprisingly without too much pretentiousness. ELP - 1992 The Atlantic Years

ELP - The Atlantic Years

Perhaps this is the unique collection by ELP which is really worth to be checked out from the beginning to the end!! The selection is good and the remastered tracks earn a lot...I think of "Tarkus", but also "Picture at an exhibition". Certainly the ballad "I believe in Father Christmas" by Lake is not unforgettable, but his contribution within the whole contest works quite well! Besides it's strange that such an aggressive and epic song like "Hoedown" has been not chosen, but of course it's not a major defect, as they have inserted the memorable suite "Karn Evil 9" into this remarkable collection.

King Crimson - (1976) A Young Person's Guide To King Crimson

Young Person's guide to King Crimson

Young Person's guide to king crimson

This superb compilation probably took its title from one of Benjamin Britten’s works, ‘A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’. One of Robert Fripp’s little jokes, I guess. As a two-LP overview of King Crimson’s career until 1974 this set just couldn’t be bettered, but when it appeared many critics complained about the absence of “Schizoid Man”, which many considered to be KC’s signature tune. I don’t think A YOUNG PERSON’S GUIDE has ever appeared in the CD format. The packaging really only comes into its own when you can admire the original gatefold sleeve. The cover pictures are delightful; I like to think the little man on the mountaintop is actually playing a mellotron!

The extensive booklet showed us for the first time how thoughtfully Fripp would handle the “King Crimson inheritance”. Not only did he include a detailed family tree and a superb collection of black and white photographs, he also printed virtually all the reviews Crimson albums had received through the years (or at least the ones he got hold of), both positive AND negative. How many artists would dare to do that in a compilation of their best work? Fripp’s tactics certainly paid off: the reader commiserates with critics bemoaning the low quality of albums such as EARTHBOUND, and sniggers at idiots who, all of thirty-five years ago, failed to appreciate the splendour of LARKS’ TONGUES IN ASPIC.

(Fripp would later extend the YOUNG PERSON’S booklet, as well as its selection of tracks, for the first King Crimson CD box set, FRAME BY FRAME, which appeared in 1991.) (Prog Archives)

ELP - 1977 WORK LIVE

(Review from wikipedia, allmusic)

ELP's live album documenting their late 70s period was released posthumously in 1979, more as a contract-fulfilling album, since the band had broken up before then. It was recorded at the August 26, 1977 show at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Originally released with the title "In Concert", it was re-released with the addition of more tracks from the same concert, this time under the name "Works Live".

The band hired a 70-piece orchestra for some concerts of this tour but eventually had to dismiss the orchestra due to budget constraints that almost bankrupted the group. On the original album, the orchestra was featured in 4 tracks, the re-release adds 4 more orchestral tracks. Similar to most live albums, In Concert showcased fan favourites of previously released material. However, "Peter Gunn", ELP's take on the classic TV theme song, was never released on any of their other albums to date. ELP frequently opened with this song on the Works Volume II tour.

The set list is the widest ranging of their entire history, reaching back to "Knife Edge" (from their first album) and reviving "Abaddon's Bolero", an instrumental from Trilogy, plus a brace of tracks of all proportions from both Works albums.

There is a real sense listening to this album, however despite some light and disarming moments, that you're really listening not so much to a band as to three personalities just chomping at the bit to go solo. Lake's featured numbers were, by now, so guitar-focused that they sounded like a separate body of music, which they were. Carl Palmer, who had fully come into his own as a creative musician by this time had also achieved a distinct voice, matching that of the other two members.

The recording was done in a stadium, so it lacks the acoustics of other venues designed for music concerts. ELP isn't as fiery as we were accustomed to in their early 70s concerts. Nevertheless, it's a fair representation of the live late 70s ELP.
