Patrick Moraz - (1994) Windows of Time

Studio Album, released in 1994

I have a music community with limited number of members (not more than 10 people) who communicates using SMS Blast technology registered under my colleague prog rock friend Rizal B. Prasetijo (Ijal). Ijal used to review album or music using this media and blast the message to all members. Ijal is also an audiophile in which he can only appreciate music when the sound is produced by analog equipment – with vinyl as main format. Since last week Ijal has been traveling to London for his profession as investment banker (he is Managing Director of JP Morgan Securities). During his trip, he also visits record store to find any REFUGEE (Patrick Moraz’ band prior to Yes) vinyl if available; because I shared to the members of SMS Blast that REFUGEE is a masterpiece of prog rock. But he could not find it. So he grabs Patrick Moraz CDs “Future Memories I & II” and “Windows of Time”). The below review was written by Ijal during his leisure time at hotel room, using his mobile phone, blasted to all members. It is posted here with his permission.

A Review by Rizal B. Prasetijo:

In contrast to the Patrick Moraz's Future Memories analysed yesterday, the Moraz's Windows of Time offers a sharp different concept. While both albums were recorded live, in the Future Memories, Moraz dealt with a dozen of keyboards and attempted to explore the technical boundaries of his rigs without putting forward a clear line of thinking. In the Windows of Time, Moraz only used a single Steinway & Sons model D, concert grand piano and attempted to articulate his understanding on the concept of time (the constraint that he found when he made this album) in his musical language.

What makes the Windows of Time is rather unique for me is, in addition to write compositions, he also (I think) spent a considerable time in writing the reasoning behind the creation of his compositions in his album sleeve. "Is time just a concept or really a constant? And if so, to what, to whom, to where, to when?... While listening to this CD, you may feel that you are spending only a few minutes, or may be an hour, depending your emotional response..." Mr. Moraz wrote. Simply put, the listener must first read the write up on the sleeve as the prologue, ushering him to the decrpty Mr. Moraz's musical message in this album.

The album is initiated by the percussion-like sound for 53", but if you listen properly, it was actually Mr. Moraz stood up and hit the wood panel of its Steinway grand piano, then bow, put his half body inside the grand piano, and hit the Steinway piano strings (famous for the brightness of its sound). He did these actions couple of time.

The album itself consists of the combination of complicated classical music structure (with fast note, beat, and sharp different tonalities), combined with some jazzy, easy listening, kind of light late afternoon composition, describing the struggle and difficulties in making this album, and how relief and satisfied Mr. Moraz was at the end when he was able to complete in a given certain windows of time. Please, look at the pyramid in the album sleeve, to decrpty Mr. Moraz's hidden musical message in the album sleeve, while you are listening the album track by track. Otherwise you are getting lost.

That said, the journey to decrpty his hidden message in this album by no means is as exciting or as joyful as when I attempted to interpret and find the link between Moraz and Yes' song: the Gates of Delirium (Relayer) with Ivan Tolstoy's War and Peace. The latter was clearly far superior and articulate. But, I want to say that amidst the rising of commercialism, Mr. Moraz is still dare to stand up and offer this kind of alternative product. His album isn't easy to be digested (and commercially, is unlikely to be successful), but the excitement listening to Windows of Time, in my view, lies on the decrpytion process. While your ears capture note by note, beat by beat, tempo by tempo, your brain will be forced to link these musical riddles to what you have previously read in the album sleeve. That's what really stimulates my sixth sense!

Patrick Moraz - (1976) The Story of I

A Progressive Rock album which also mixes some Jazz-Rock music with Brazilian music influences from Samba. The music is complex, dominated by the keyboards and the Brazilian percussion and vocal arrangements.Sometimes the album sounds like recorded during a Brazilian "Carnivall". It is a concept album about the history of an hotel. The sound of this album shows how far some musical ideas by Patrick Moraz were from YES`music when he was a member of the band, and this album was recorded during that period of time. Maybe that was the main reason why he left YES in late 1976.

Crish Squire - (1975) Fish out Water

Studio Album, released in 1975

When all the members of Yes released solo albums after the appearance of the glorious RELAYER, only three of them came up with (more or less) convincing results. Jon Anderson produced an embarrassing science-fiction fairytale which contained a couple of great tunes. Patrick Moraz came up with wild, half-Brasilian jazz-rock fusion. And Chris Squire emerged with an album so conceited and self-satisfied that more than half of it proved unlistenable. To this day I do not understand how someone can write a supposedly sensitive love song like “You by my Side”, and spoil it completely by bleating out the lyrics as insensitively as possible. To say nothing about the overblown orchestral finale of the same piece! Similarly, the so-called ‘canon’ towards the end of “Safe” (instrument after instrument taking up the same dire melody, accompanied by Chris on bass) must have been intended to prove how many musicians Mr Squire could afford to pay...

Fortunately, the Fish also pulled off two great performances, which trumped anything his colleagues from Yes had on offer. “Hold out your hand” is an exciting opening number with delightfully 'floating' organ playing, more convincing than the similar “Parallells” which would appear two years later on GOING FOR THE ONE. And “Lucky Seven” is superb: Squire, Bill Bruford and the gorgeous Mel Collins conspiring to give us all a catchy, funky tune that proves how much music they’ve got in their blood.

If only Chris had kept FISH OUT OF WATER simple and left out those orchestral excrescences! Two and a half stars.

YES - (1976) Open The gates

OPEN THE GATES
June 17, 1976
Roosevelt Stadium
Jersey City, New Jersey

The 1976 Summer Tour began May 28, 1976 in Roanoke, Virginia. The Roosevelt stadium concert was number 16 in a tour that would include 54 shows. The band members had recently finished solo projects and had reconvened to begin their biggest American concert tour to date. At the time there was still an enormous interest in the material from their most recent album Relayer. Gates of Delirium and Soundchaser, both from that album, were played in Jersey City that night. From one that was there:
“We were there in 6 inches of mud in ‘76 at Roosevelt stadium in New Jersey for RELAYER”.
–Notes from the Edge

“Gates of Delirium is a war song, a battle scene, but it’s not to explain war or denounce it, really. It’s an emotional description with the slight feeling at the end of ‘do we have to go through this forever?’ There’s a prelude, a change, a victory tune, and peace at the end, with hope for the future….” –Jon Anderson

“Sound Chaser is like this madman from hell…an indescribable mixture of Patrick’s jazzy keyboards and my weird sort of flamenco electric, which I’m sure has never been done before and will probably never be done again!” –Steve Howe

Strangely enough, “To Be Over”, the last of the three songs from “Relayer” had been dropped from the set list for reasons unknown, perhaps to allow the band to include a few more of the old stage favorites like “Siberian Khatru” and “Heart of the Sunrise”.

“The concert was originally broadcast on WNEW from New York. According to former WNEW-FM DJ Richard Neer in his book, 'FM', there was no mixing of the show being done by the radio station engineers; the feed going out over the air was what the guy doing Yes' sound sent out. (This was because the manager of WNEW at the time
was too cheap to pay Neer and a sound engineer companion of his the few hundred bucks extra they would have charged to do an on-the-fly broadcast mix). Hence the rather interesting variations in sound quality as the show progressed.” –Forgotten Yesterdays.com

Another enthusiastic fan recalled: “It was 100 degrees that day. When we finally got to the stadium, there was about a battalion of police off to one side. The line of fans was about 10 abreast and went around the stadium. The police had bullhorns and were telling people "no glass inside the stadium". When we got inside, there was
a hot air balloon tethered over the stage, with the cover FROM TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS on it!
The opening was the Poussette Dart band. Between the opening and Yes, there were fireworks. One of the rocket stands fell over during launch and a rocket shot across the infield and blew up under a car! Finally, true dark fell around 9:00 PM and Yes began to play. During the battle scenes in "Gates of Delirium", the laser
(electric green, dark blue) was shot into the audience in random, staccato bursts. Later, during "Soon", the laser fanned out and spun over the audience, who craned up hands over their heads to touch the light. -Notes From The Edge.

It is with great pleasure that we now bring you this remaster of a legendary performance by a legendary band. Enjoy this great 1976 moment with Yes.
-PRRP Staff

Notes from the Re-master:
Since the source for this concert is a radio broadcast, the sound quality is generally good to begin with. The actual source was a CD version of the master tapes obtained from the broadcasting radio station WNEW. PRRP would like to thank Shaun Toole for providing his remastered source to us for this project.
Viable music signal was present up to 18,000 Hz. This is quite rare for progressive rock concerts available from the 1970’s and makes this recording quite unique. A radio transmission or microphone / patch cord buzz occurred in the left channel off and on throughout the show and needed to be corrected. Fortunately, the buzz was specifically identified in the frequency spectrum and was surgically attacked. This approach produced a minimal effect on the remainder of the music. Pops and clicks occurred frequently and were manually removed. Radio announcer volume was out of proportion to the music in some segments and needed to be adjusted. Finally, only a slight amount of noise reduction was needed during quite segments.

Bill Bruford - (1975 - 1985) Master Strokes

Master Strokes 1978-1985 is a 'best of' retrospective featuring the music of monster fusion drummer Bill Bruford from the late '70s to early '80s period. Of particular interest to guitar fans is the superb legato stylings of Allan Holdsworth on eight of the CD's fourteen tracks. Guitarist John Clark adds his work to two more tracks, while bass fans will thrill to the low end of Jeff Berlin (listen to the clip of "Five G"). The compilation features tracks from the Bill Bruford solo albums "Feels Good To Me" (1978), "One Of A Kind" (1979) and "Gradually Going Tornado" (1980), plus three tracks pulled from the Patrick Moraz/Bill Bruford collaborative releases "Music For Piano And Drums" (1984) and "Flags" (1985). Essential for Holdsworth fans, especially considering the lack of Holdsworth solo releases available at any point in time.
