Badger - (1973) One Live Badger

Badger - (1973) One Live Badger

Badger were one of those seventies bands that are barely remembered outside the circle of hard-core Yes fans. Only in existence for a couple of years, they managed to produce two albums, White Lady, the 1974 studio album which was a fairly mellow, soul-influenced affair featuring ex-Apple Records artist Jackie Lomax, and the altogether more interesting progressive rock debut One Live Badger. Formed in mid 1972, the roots of the band stretch back a few years earlier when Tony Kaye linked up with David Foster who was getting material together for a prospective solo album. Foster, a former band mate of Jon Anderson in The Warriors, was first introduced to the Yes camp when he co-wrote Sweet Dreams and Time And A Word with the vocalist with for the band's second album. Although the solo album was eventually scrapped, Foster and Kaye kept in touch and following Kaye's departure from Yes and brief involvement with Flash, set about remixing and reworking the original material.

Deciding to form a band to play and record the songs, drummer Roy Dyke was recruited from the recently disbanded Ashton, Gardener and Dyke who recommended that guitarist Brian Parrish, who had recorded a largely ignored album with Adrian Gurvitz, should complete the line-up. After intensive rehearsals, the band made their debut at "The Rainbow Theatre" in December 1972 supporting Yes at the infamous concerts that spawned the sprawling Yessongs live album. Atlantic Records, to whom both groups were signed, decided that as the equipment was in place they should make the most of their financial outlay and record the support group's set as well. In a bold move that seems rather extraordinary by today's standards, it was these recordings that formed the basis of One Live Badger.

And what a great album it is, the material is strong and the group sound as if they have been playing and writing together for years. The production, by the group, Jon Anderson and Geoffrey Haslam, is crisp although somewhat more raw and aggressive than the resulting Yes recordings from the same concerts. As expected, Kaye's signature Hammond organ sound is to the fore on most of the tracks (and in particular on the album closer On The Way Home), although he does use other keyboards to add different textures: the chorus of Wind of Change features the mellotron, The River utilises an electric piano to great effect and a Moog synthesiser is evident on other tracks. Guitarist Brian Parrish plays some great solos, although nothing too flash (excuse the pun!) or overburdened with technical virtuosity. The solid and efficient rhythm section are quite prominent in the mix, as one would expect from a live recording, Foster's bass in particular being particularly clear - the dynamic mix of driving bass, riffing guitar and wailing Hammond during On The Way Home is superb and probably something that could only be got away with on a live recording. The closest comparison would be akin to a rockier Traffic.

Overall, a wonderful live album and worthy of inclusion in the collection of any fan of 1970s rock music, not just those drawn by the Yes connections. My only complaints are with the quality of the packaging. Roger Dean's cover artwork is poorly reproduced (the band name and album title are hard to see in detail), the booklet (four sides with only the front and rear artwork in colour) contains no extra information aside from the original sleeve notes and just reproduces the four colour photographs from the tray inlay in black and white. There are probably no bonus live recordings that could have been added to the album, 40 minutes would no doubt have been the length of the support act's set, and the inclusion of any existing rehearsal or demo cuts would have been incongruous, but one does feel that the addition of a few extra photos, a potted history of the band and even some reminiscences from the group members themselves would have helped justified what is effectively a full-price release. Still, it is the music that matters and on that score you can't complain at all.(chrisgoesrock)

Circa - Circa

CIRCA is a progressive rock supergroup founded by four musicians associated with Yes: current Yes member Alan White (drums), former Yes members Tony Kaye (Hammond, keyboards) and Billy Sherwood (bass, vocals), and guitarist Jimmy Haun, who played on the album Union. (from wikipedia)

After releasing an album in 2007, Circa hit the road with their tour, where the first half is the whole album, and second half was a superb Yes instrumental medley of 39 minutes, including a track from almost every Yes album, including several songs that haven't been played for ages (Looking Around, Something's Coming, Parallels, Tempus Fugit, Lightning Strikes, etc)

In addition to the players listed above, Billy Sherwood's brother Michael Sherwood was playing keys, vocoder and backing vocals. (bringing the question: was Kaye in a good moment or was Michael playing most parts?) Jimmy Haun, a guitarist who says Steve Howe was his main influence, is a good surprise.

From this show - Rosfest, Glenside, PA, US May 3, 2008 - I uploaded just the Yes medley. If there's interest and I can, I'll upload the rest.
You can know more about Circa on their long interview to Notes from the Edge. (part 1 and part 2)

Now the medley:
Looking Around; The Prophet; Every Little Thing; Harold Land; No Opportunity Necessary, no Experience Needed; Something's Coming; Yours is No Disgrace; Heart of the Sunrise; South Side of the Sky; Roundabout; Close to the Edge; And you and I; Ritual; Sound Chaser; Parallels; Arriving UFO; On the Silent Wings of Freedom; Tempus Fugit; Changes; Owner of a Lonely Heart; Cinema; Rhythm of Love; Lift Me Up; Endless Dream; Loveshine; Mind Drive; Open Your Eyes; Lightning Strikes.

Yes - (1994) Talk

THE LAST RABIN CONTRIBUTION!

I don't know what happened exactly between UNION and TALK, but the 80s line-up reunited tp produce one last album. This is the last TREVOR RABIN appearance with YES, but he will leave with a bang. On TALK, RABIN is not sharing any leadership with Anderson. This is a RABIN album with YES members as back-up band; no less. I think the only contribution of JON ANDERSON is limited to the lyrics.

TREVOR RABIN plays guitar ,sings, plays keyboards (yes,Tony KAYE playsonly hammond) , programs, engineers, and of course produces the album through a computer; did i mention he composes the songs as well?? and of course, i am sure he told the other 4 members that the services of designer ROGER DEAN were again no longer needed, thus back to ugly and dull cover artwork; i guess his choice of covers is not his strong point.

Like any other RABIN-era Yes album, we have a mixed bag of horrible plain pop songs that tend to sound all the same after a while.Trevor RABIN knows how to find hooks when composing, the problem after a while, it's always a little bit the same thing, repeated ad nauseam.

So what's good, what's bad? Let start with the ugly, the cold production of the album. The album is like the cover,it has no warmth, no coziness, that's bland sound with almost all the time, horrible drums on the forefront. And believe me , ALAN WHITE is not being asked to copy BILL BRUFORD; You could have put a drum machine and it would sound the same. Also The bass playing from CHRIS SQUIRE has become almost non-existent. Whatever happened to the old glorious basslines from YESteryear? That's the very bad part. Some songs are irritating like the horrible ''state of play'' or the dull ''walls'' .

But after that, that's not bad at all: ''The Calling'' is classic pop songs but with good hooks and nice arrangements. ''I am waiting'' is just plain beautiful ballad as is ''where will you be'', which could sound like old YES. And for the first time in years, YES comes back with an epic ''endless dream''. I guess RABIN wanted to show that he could compose an epic too as he was about to leave the band. Oh! this is not ''The gates of delirium'' or other good oldie from the glorious times, but that's a very interesting 15mn piece of music with a lot of rythm changes, sometimes hard-rocking, sometimes sweet and peaceful. This is almost a solo piece as TREVOR RABIN is in charge of guitars and keyboards and do a lot of vocals l I guess it was his swansong, his testament when saying goodbye to YES.

So with some good parts, some excellent parts, some dull parts and some ugly parts, with a horrible production, i would put classify this album as average..... so let's go with 3 stars. But good news: the great YES is about to return soon!!

Yes - (1991) Union

Studio Album, released in 1991

I heard that Wakeman has referred to this one as “Onion”. You know, it might have worked if only they had included Patrick Moraz and Peter Banks.

This really isn’t that bad of an album. I got into it when it was fresh and then I saw them on the tour. (A crappy outdoor venue I might add.)

The first couple of pieces are a bit too commercial, but then comes in Masquerade, a rather nice acoustic piece by Howe. Lift Me Up starts of with promise, but then goes back into commercial territory. Miracle of Life’s not too bad. Silent Talking may be one of the real gems on the album apart form Howe’s solo piece. More We Live/Let Go is nice, too. The extremely short Evensong is interesting, prog, yet only 51 seconds. Take the Water to the Mountain, which wraps it up, is quite good, too.

There's some dense and intense moments offered on Union. Not a Yes masterpiece, but really not a piece of crap.

So, all in all, an interesting, but uneven experiment. If you can get past the commercial bits, there’s something decent here to listen to. And frankly, the commercial bits aren’t all that bad.

Yes - (1983) 90125

Studio Album, released in 1983

90125 was an accidental Yes album. Yes had been disbanded in 1981 and Chris Squire and Alan White had met up with South African guitarist Trevor Rabin in 1982 and recorded songs for an album under the name of "Cinema." Former Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye, who had been fired in 1971, joined Cinema. When Squire played some of the material to Jon Anderson in 1983, Anderson became interested in the project. With four former Yes members in the band, it was decided to use the Yes brand on this album. Rabin was dubious at first as he did not want to be known as Steve Howe's replacement (Howe was with Asia at the time), but rather wanted to be the lead guitarist of a new group. Rabin changed his mind when Anderson added lyrics and his distinctive vocal style to the existing tracks. Besides, it would have more marketability under the Yes brand name.

So, 90125 was not originally intended to be a Yes album as it sounds nothing like Yes, with the exception of Anderson's voice. Thus, it seems unfair to compare it with earlier Yes works. Rabin has a completely different guitar style from Howe and Squire takes a more relaxed approach to bass on this album. Instead of the complex bass riffs of the past, he basically imitates the typical bassist one would hear on an average AOR song.

Judging 90125 on its own merits and not comparing it to any prior Yes album, I'm left with the conclusion that this is simply a pop rock/AOR collection of songs with some showing prog tendencies. If one does compare this to previous Yes works, it easily ranks as the worst Yes album in their career up to that point. However, as a pop rock album, it's not bad. Hearts and Changes are really nicely done. But as a progressive rock effort, two stars is as high as I will go. For collectors and fans only. Even Yes fans might want to avoid unless they are completionists.

YES - (1981) Classic Yes

Classic Yes

Boxset/Compilation, released in 1981

This album is a compilation of among the best early YES songs, from "The Yes Album", "Fragile", "Close to the Edge" and "Going for the One". I find the choice of the songs very well made: "Heart Of The Sunrise", "Wonderous Stories", "Yours Is No Disgrace", "Starship Trooper", "Long Distance Runaround", "Fish", "And You And I", "Roundabout" and "I've Seen All Good People". All those tracks are excellent. The tracks mostly come from "The Yes Album" and "Fragile". It definitely gives the listener an excellent overview of what YES made during the early 70's! The 2 last tracks, "Roundabout" and "I've Seen All Good People" were recorded live.

Track Listings

Yes - (1971) The Yes Album

Studio Album, released in 1971

The beginning of Yes's progressive period can be seen in this album. Although they wouldn't hit their zenith until Fragile, this album is a good precursor. As Steve Howe's debut studio album with Yes, he certainly gets a lot of the spotlight with solos on top of solos on top of solos, this could be one of Howe's most noodly albums with Yes. Chris Squire now takes a powerful forefront with his jagged bass sound that pierces through the Peter Banks drenched atmospheres. Bill Bruford is adequate on this album, nothing terribly spectacular or noteworthy. This album could be seen as the beginning of Jon Anderson's wall of poetry lyrics frenzy that can be seen on the next few albums.

Noteworthy tracks are Yours is No Disgrace, Clap, and Starship Trooper. All of these tracks are Steve Howe dominated, but they are enjoyable to listen to. Yours is no Disgrace is a bluesy rocker that has sprawling work from Howe, and some great bass and drum interplay from Squire and Bruford. Clap is the precursor to Mood for a Day. Steve Howe goes with a bit of a rockabilly, country feeling to this one, and it is a fan favorite still today. Starship Trooper is probably the definitive Yes track along with Roundabout and Close to the Edge, split up into three parts, the most noteworthy is Wurm. This section features phased chord work from Howe and one of his best solos on top of this epic riff. The second side of the album is good, but not really noteworthy and otherwise drags down this album.

YES - (1970) Every Little Thing

April 3, 1970. Cologne, Germany

This is one of the last shows with Peter Banks. The sound quality is better than the 1969 show in Belgium I posted here before. But not so good. The voice doesn't sound very clear, but guitars and keys are very good.
The show's repertoire is all from Yes and Time and a Word. Only 5 songs, as it was a big festival with Deep Purple, Soft Machine and others.
An exciting performance, you can see the band is having lots of fun. Bill's playing is awesome. Due to time restrictions, they couldn't jam too much, and that brought good and down-to-earth performances of No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed and Everydays.
