Genesis - (1974-12-16) Toronto

Genesis - (1974-12-16) Toronto
At the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. This recording is one

of numerous Farm-sourced recordings from this tour to surface

in 2007. Whereas most of the Lamb shows taped by the road

crew seem to have been made with a backstage microphone, this

is one of a few that is a real soundboard. The sound quality

is therefore quite nice, though I heard the occasional buzz

and perhaps a few pops, probably from the original tapes.

Unfortunately the show is chopped up. As usual the cuts begin

a little past halfway in the performance: we get only the

beginning minute of "Anyway" before it abruptly cuts off and

we jump to the ending verse of "Lamia." Though in Paul

Russell's book he notes a complete "Silent Sorrow," this

version (which matches the one listed by Simon on The

Movement) only has the first minute of the song before the

recording once again cuts off, ending the first disc.

The rest of the Lamb performance continues without a cut.

Peter omits a few lines from "In the Rapids," as he often did

on this tour, especially in the early days. Unfortunately we

are left with only the ending minute of "Box," but we do get

the complete second encore, "Watcher."

Genesis - (1998) Archive Volume 1 (1969 - 1975)

GENESIS - (1998) ARCHIVE 1969 - 1975

Boxset/Compilation, released in 1998

For many years the fans of Genesis with Peter Gabriel (like me) had to listen to vinyl bootlegs, some of good quality ("In Concert 1973", from the "Selling England..." tour), some of awful quality ("Swelled and Spent", from the "Lamb" tour) to have an idea of how good were the years of Genesis with Gabriel in concert. At last, in 1998 the band released live recordings from those tours. Also, the band released other songs which were also released on bootlegs (like the BBC recordings), the "lost" b-side "Twilight Alehouse", the single "Happy the Man", and the different short lenght version of "Watcher of the Skies", plus Demos from their very early days as a band (1967-69). So, this is a very interesting Box Set,despite the overdubs to some of the live recordings.

CDs 1 and 2: The complete "Lamb" album played in concert during the 1974-75 tour.

"Swelled and Spent" was one of the few bootlegs which I listened which had a complete "Lamb" show (somewhat edited), but the recording is awful. I have listened to two Radio Shows from that tour: one very edited from the same show included in this Box Set (Los Angeles), and another recorded in Wembley, with more songs. In the Radio Show recorded in Los Angeles, the voice of Gabriel sounds good, and it has "it" recorded in concert. Tony Banks justified the inclusion of a "new studio version" of "it" in this Box Set (the same old studio version, remixed but with new vocals by Gabriel) saying that "the recording engineer forgot to change tapes, he was asleep at the job, so we lost "it""). It seems that the same source for the Radio Show were the tapes that Genesis recorded from this show. So, apart form a "mistake" from Collins, who lost the beat slighty because it seems that he threw a dum stick, the live version of "it" is still very good. In comparison, in the Wembley concert, which was recorded almost at the end of the tour, Gabriel`s vocals sound tired. "Swelled and Spent", which was recorded in May, also shows that Gabriel`s voice was tired of many dates on tour singing the complete "Lamb" album (plus one encore, and sometimes two encores). So, I think that in the case of the Los Angeles show there wasn`t, IMO, a very strong reason to overdub new Gabriel`s vocals. The band had their reasons to do it, and I respect their reasons. But...it could have been better to have the "whole real show". I think that Gabriel re-recorded most of his vocals. I think that old fans should have "forgiven" his original vocals even if they weren`t very good in some parts. The L.A concert was in January, and I think that his voice was still good enogh to leave it intact in the Box Set. It is also known that Hackett re-recorded some of his guitar parts, this is clear in "Hairless Heart" (he recorded an acoustic guitar part similar to the studio version; in the Wembley show he played this part in his electric guitar) and in "The Lamia" (he re-recorded the lead guitar). Despite this "studio tricks", the recording and mixing of the concert is very good. Unfortunately the band didn`t film a "Lamb" show during that tour which could have been a very good companion to this Box Set.

CD 3:

Recordings from the "Selling England by the Pound" tour, Rainbow Theatre, Oct. 1973: I listened to this recordings without ovedubs in the "In Concert 1973" bootleg which also includes "Cinema Show", "Watcher of the Skies" and "The Battle of Epping Forest", but not "More Fool Me". For this Box Set Gabriel also re-recorded some of his vocals, and again I think that it wasn`t really necessary, apart from the occasional out of tune vocals, Gabriel sings very well in the original live recordings (which I think that they were also broadcasted in the Radio in England in the same year). Hackett re-recorded his lead guitar part in "Firth of Fifth" (there even was a short video of Hackett filmed while re-recording this part in the official website dedicated to this Box Set). In the original live version, it seems that he lost some concentration and he played the part like he forgotten it a bit. In this case, again, I don`t think that it was really necessary to re-record it (a bit of variety in playing the songs is also interesting, IMO). I think that Gabriel and Hackett also re-recorded some of their parts in "Supper`s Ready". Again, these live recordings and mixings (of all the live songs in this CD) are very good. "Stagnation" is a BBC recording from 1971, with Collins and Hackett in the band, in a very good version of this song. "Twilight Alehouse": a B- side from 1973, a very good song from the band, one of their best. I also have listened to live versions of this song which also sound very good. "Happy the Man": a single from 1972, not very interesting for me. "Watcher of the Skies": a different version of the song, shorter in duration, which it seems it was previously available in France in a compilation called "Genesis Rock Theatre". I prefer the original version.

CD 4:

Demos from 1967 to 1969: very interesting for the old fans, and particularly for the fans of their first album. They also included some songs from that album in rough mixes without the orchestral arrangements. In this case I think that the orchestral arrangements helped the songs to sound better. The band sounds still very "inmature", but with some good quality. Some songs are naive, really, but still good. The BBC recordings from 1970: some of them are very good, like "Sheperd" (with Banks sharing lead vocals with Gabriel; Banks sang very well) and "Pacidy".

In conclusion, this is a very good Box Set.

Genesis - (1974) The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

Warning: This is NOT a review – it’s an experience sharing …
Why? It’s because there has been so many excellent reviews about this album. For detailed review you can read what my colleague collaborator Dex F. has put it in about this album. I also agree with what Ivan has written that the claustrophobic "In the Cage" and the tittle song are highlights of this masterpiece that cost me so much time to understand and love- on first listen many many years ago (my case). This masterpiece has created great memories throughout my study as well as work career.
About a week ago I had a discussion with the senior executive of Indonesian Progressive Society (IPS) on the plan to release a debut album of another new prog band in my country at the end of this month. He said that the release will be celebrated with the live show of the new band. And I asked him on how come conducting a live show an album that has not been released yet? He answered me calmly: “Gatot, don’t you remember The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis? It was released when the crowds were expecting the band to play the tunes they had had been familiar with. But the band did not play any single tune from their previous album. That represented the launch of the album”. So inspiring answer, don’t you think? That suffices for me to have another spin again of this very very legendary and masterpiece album! I also listened to the entire live that he mentioned during my conversation with him: the disc 1 & 2 of Genesis Archive box set volume 1. I love both versions even though I prefer the live one. Awesome!
For me this album was the pinnacle of Genesis career in prog rock where the music, the lyrics, the overall concept of this concept album are really great. The tracks that always create a stimuli for me to repeat are: Fly on a Windshield, In The Cage, Back In NYC, Hairless Heart, Anyway, and The Lamia. It does not mean the others are not excellent tracks. Fly On A Windshield is a great composition song with powerful and heavy voice of Peter Gabriel “There’s something solid forming in the air …” oh man … this opening part stabs my heart at every spin of the track. The lyrics continuation that says: “The wind is blowing harder now, Blowing dust into my eyes. The dust settles on my skin, Making a crust I cannot move in..” is also memorable part. And it turns quite until Gabriel sings this beautifully: “And I’m hovering like a fly, waiting for the windshield on the freeway.” JRENG! Wow … man …the music that follows is killing me man ….!!! (I used to call it in my locality language as “nggeblak” which roughly means like: I’m stunned and my mind is paralyzed hearing this wonderful musical harmony!).
The music is continued with an exploration of keyboard, howling guitars and dynamic drumming followed with continued singing: “Echoes of the Broadway Everglades, With her mythical madonnas still walking in their shades: Lenny Bruce, declares a truce and plays his other hand. Marshall Mcluhan, casual viewin', head buried in the sand. Sirens on the rooftops wailing, but there's no ship sailing. Groucho, with his movies trailing, stands alone with his punchline failing.” “Klu Klux Klan serve hot soul food and the band plays 'In the Mood' ….” I like the way Gabriel sings “Klu Klux Klan …” …
Note: I always grab the CD sleeve and sing along with Gabriel while reading the lyrics whenever I listen to Fly On A Windshield. No wonder that I can remember on top of my head some verses of the lyrics - especially the opening part and those that mention Winston ciggarette. Actually I confuse about this track as if we look at the lyrical coverage, the part that starts with "Echoes of the Broadway ..." is actually already part of The Broadway Melody of 1974 - but, the CD version track still include this as Fly on A Windshield. Well, it does not matter, actually - it's a manufacturing issue, I think.
How can I not repeat this killing melody music? It’s so wonderful. Other songs – except the Waiting Room – are excellent as well. Hairless Heart and Fly On A Windshield have influenced many neo prog bands music – at least on the nice melody these tracks offer. Super Highly Recommended! Keep on Proggin’ ..!
Progressively yours,
GW – Review #319

Genesis - (1973) Selling England by the Pound

Genesis - (1973) Selling England by the Pound
Studio Album, released in 1973

This is my favorite Genesis album ( along with the rest of the world) and one of the first I purchased. This happened 25 years after Selling England By the Pound was released in 1973. This says alot about the longevity of this album. To think that I find just as much pleasure in this album 25 years after it´s release as the ones who bought it in 1973 is a miracle. Very few albums keep their magic this long.

Genesis were at their peak when they made this album. The classic seventies lineup was still intact, and everyone seems to contribute with the best of their talents. I will have to make a special note here that you should really listen to Tony Banks keyboards on Selling England By the Pound as they have never been so omnipresent in Genesis music before. This has to be one of my favorite keyboard perfomances ever.

Dancing with the Moonlit Knight starts the album in great style with the classic Peter Gabriel a capella opening: "Can You Tell Me where My Country Lies". The song starts of mellow but soon builds into one of the most technically challenging songs Genesis ever made. I love this song and it is one of my favorite Genesis moments. I remember when I heard this one the first time. I was blown away be the fact that Genesis could be something else than the eighties hit machine I knew.

I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) is a good song with a great humour and some nice percussion. It took me a while to like it though, as I didn´t find it that exciting to start with. It grew on me though and allthough I still don´t find it to be the best song Genesis ever wrote it´s really good.

Firth Of Fifth is a great epic song and another of my favorites. It starts out with Tony Banks playing som classical inspired piano and then comes a very heavy riff. The song ends with the classic Steve Hackett guitar lead ( solo) which is maybe his finest moment with Genesis ( there are of course numerous, but this one is very significant).

The weakest song on Selling England By the Pound and the song that almost make this album loose a star is More Fool Me. A useless pop song sung by Phil Collins. This is the worst song Genesis made with this lineup, and a step in the wrong direction. It´s rather dissapointing on an album that is so great. I always skip this song and never felt it was part of the album. Selling England By the Pound is still a masterpiece though, just don´t listen to this garbage song.

The Battle Of Epping Forest is a great epic with some very clever lyrics. Peter is at his best here, using multible personalities and voices to match them. The song is one of the more progressive Genesis songs in terms of structure. It´s a great song and an enjoyable listen.

After The Ordeal is a nice intrumental track, and it´s a breather between the two epics that surround it, as it is very mellow an soothing for the ears. Maybe not the best song on Selling England By the Pound, but certainly not a bad one either.

The Cinema Show is another one of my favorite Genesis songs. It´s really emotive and beautiful. Listen to those 12 string guitars. The song ends with a synth lead/ solo by Tony Banks that is almost in the vein of ELP, just more melodic. Aisle Of Plenty is just an outro song and plays some of the themes from the other songs on the album. OK but nothing special.

My conclusion is that allthough there are 1 weak track and a couple of good but not essential tracks on this album, they are overshadowed by the masterpieces. These songs are the best symphonic Prog rock songs ever made by any band, and I can give this album no less than 5 stars for that.

For me this is simply the most important album in the history of symphonic prog rock and the best place to start for newcomers to the genre. (progRachives)
